Open the box as soon as it arrives and store it in a cool, dry place. Keep the box away from sunlight and freezing temperatures. Leave the bulbs and plants in their plastic packages to help control moisture.
Fall-planted bulbs (such as tulips and daffodils) should be planted as soon as nights are cool and soil temperatures have dropped. While waiting, keep the bulbs cool (50-60°F) and protect them from freezing.
Most spring-planted bulbs (such as dahlias and cannas) should be planted outdoors as soon as all danger of frost has passed. Exceptions include begonias, which should be given an early start indoors, and heat-loving tropicals such as caladiums and elephant ears, which should not be planted outdoors until nights are warm and the soil is at least 65°F. If you are not planting immediately, store the bulbs at 50-60°F.
Perennials can be planted outdoors as soon as the soil is soft enough to dig. If you need to wait a week or two, open the packages and make sure the plants inside are firm and barely damp. If outdoor planting must be delayed further, start your plugs or bare root plants in nursery pots and transplant them later.
